Witnesses say that the policemen attempted a hit-and –run, but people around the scene of the occurrence compelled them to take the victim to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, where he eventually died.

 

Police command arrests policemen involved in killing UNIPORT student

The Rivers State Police Command has apprehended the policemen in the patrol van which was said to have killed Oghenekevwe Edah, a final year engineering student of the University of Port Harcourt. The policemen are now reportedly being detained at the command headquarters.

The victim was said to have been knocked down while on his way back from Church yesterday, Sunday. He was standing at the Assemblies of God Church Junction, Alakahia, Port Harcourt, when a police van driving against traffic hit him.

Witnesses say that the policemen attempted a hit-and run, but people around the scene of the occurrence compelled them to take the victim to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, where he eventually died.

Further reports say that the policemen tried again to absolve themselves of any wrongdoing, saying they only picked him from the road after he was knocked down by a vehicle.

However the culprits have been rounded up and detained, waiting to answer to the crime.

The deceased’s younger brother, Emmanuel, told correspondents that representatives of the family met with the Choba Divisional Police Officer on Thursday with a view to meeting the state Commissioner of Police.

In his words, “The Divisional Police Officer of Choba Police Station said the policemen who were inside the police van that knocked Kevwe down were in detention at the police headquarters in Rivers State. The DPO said the policemen involved, led by Inspector John Kanu, did not deny the crime.”

Emmanuel also revealed that his family and the DPO had gone to the CP’s office, but were told that he was not available, adding that another appointment was fixed for Tuesday (tomorrow).

“We will patiently wait till Tuesday to see the CP. We are also anxious to meet the policemen that were in the van that hit my brother. If the case is not handled in the right way, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police and President Muhammadu Buhari’s attention will be drawn to it. The policemen that were in the van that hit my brother must be brought to book and prosecuted accordingly. All we want is justice,”the distraught brother said.

65-year-old Patricia Edah, speaking of her son, described the deceased as gentle and humble, adding that his death was nothing short of a jolting shock to the family.

“His father and I are old and we cannot do any job again. He was the one taking care of us and all we want is for the law to take its course and he should be given a good burial.

“We have resigned ourselves to fate. We are in Abraka, Delta State, and we don’t even have the money to transport ourselves to Port Harcourt where the incident happened,” she said.

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, confirmed the arrest.

He said, “We have arrested the policemen and investigation is ongoing. As soon as we are done with our investigations, we will let the public know.”
