Creating grazing fields for herdsmen is an abomination – CAN tells NASS

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Wednesday described any plan to create grazing fields for herdsmen as “a wicked and abominable act.”


It, therefore, called on the National Assembly to reject any bill intended to allow the creation of such field.
The Christian body, in a statement signed by the Chairman of CAN in the South-East, Most. Rev. David Eberechukwu, said herdsmen were already doing grievous harm to their host communities and that creating such fields would amount to pouring fuel into fire.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has disclosed that things have changed within the last few months of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government as Nigerians are already imbibing the culture of change.

He tied this to the President’s demonstration of the virtue of change by adhering strictly to transparency in his fight against corruption and by instructing his drivers to obey traffic rules at all times.

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ekiti State, Chief Olajide Awe has noted that the role played by the military during the June 22, 2014 governorship election in the state can be “better imagined than experienced,” stressing that it was a battlefield between the soldiers and voters..

Awe alongside 14 others on Tuesday testified before the Army panel investigating the involvement of its officers in the 2014/2015 governorship and presidential elections in Ekiti, Osun , Rivers and Akwa-Ibom states.


Lagos government to place mosques, churches under watch over hate preaching

 The Lagos State Government has warned religious leaders who engage in hate preaching to desist from such as it would no longer be tolerated in the state. It expressed the resolve to place mosques and churches under watch as from 2016.

The state government explained that the decision was aimed at curbing any crises that may likely arise from hate preaching in any part of the state.


Mike Ozekhome: Awomolo, Falana’s views perverse interpretation of law

Constitutional Lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) has described the views of Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) and Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), on the Supreme Court’s grant of stay of proceedings in the Case against Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, as an incredible “perverse interpretation” of the Law in which both men “sought to bind the Supreme Court with the uninterpreted provisions of a law that only applies to trial courts”.


Ozekhome, in an opinion write up titled “Awomolo-Falana’s Comment- A Case of Unfortunate Sentiments Vs Law”, replied to what he called the “brash and unwarranted criticism of the apex court”.


INEC recruits 13,000 workers for Kogi election

Ahead of the November 21 gubernatorial election in Kogi State, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, says the commission had recruited and trained 13,000 supervisory and electoral officials to man the 3,000 polling units across the state.

This was as he warned that only the people of Kogi State, and no one else, will determine who their next governor will be.

Yakubu, who was addressing a stakeholders’ forum in Lokoja on Tuesday, said he was determined to build and improve on the achievements of his predecessor, Prof. Attahiru Jega, by making Kogi State election the best ever conducted in the country.

He revealed that all card readers to be used in the next Saturday election had been tested, configured and confirmed to be fit for use during the election, adding that only those with permanent voter cards, PVCs, would be eligible to vote.

The INEC boss further noted that 11 resident electoral commissioners from other states had been mobilised to see to the smooth conduct of the election.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said on Tuesday that President Muhammadu Buhari has shown that Nigeria had the capacity to join the “big league” of nations.

Mr. Mohammed said this in Abuja in the course of his interaction with the directors and heads of units in the ministry.

He said the president had leveraged his legendary personality, discipline, transparency, integrity, belief in the rule of law, and patriotism to put the country on the global map.


Force all stations hoarding fuel to sell for free – Kachikwu orders DPR

The Ministry of Petroleum Resources has instructed the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to distribute petrol of any filling stations involved in hoarding to customers free of charge.

Dr Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, announced this during his tour and monitoring of fuel stations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) .

He said that the decision became necessary given the attitude of some filling stations to hoard fuel to the detriment of the masses.


Fuel scarcity: DPR supplies 294 trucks of PMS in Abuja

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) said that 149 trucks loaded with petrol were supplied to Abuja and its environs on Tuesday.

Mr Mohammed Saidu, Head, Public Relations of DPR in a statement in Abuja, said that the supply brought the number of PMS supplied to Abuja between Monday and Tuesday to 294 trucks.

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has commended the Chairman and Spiritual Director of an indigenous company, Aqua Rapha Investment Nigeria Limited, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka for using his company to provide 4,500 jobs for the people of the state.

Presidency denies spending N6bn on Buhari’s air fleet since May

The Presidency has debunked media report alleging that an outlandish N6bn has been spent on maintaining the presidential air fleet between May and the present. It clarified that what has so far been expended is only a little above N2bn, which included salaries and repayment of old debts.

A statement, issued to the effect on Tuesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, expressed frustration at what he described as a fictional report that has caused the government a lot of negative reviews especially in the online media.”

Buhari orders arrest of Dasuki, others over arms procurement fraud

Following the findings of the 13 man committee set up by the Office of the National Security Adviser to audit the procurement of arms and equipment in the Armed Forces and Defence sector from 2007 to date as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidency has ordered the immediate arrest of former NSA, Sambo Dasuki, and others. 

In a statement signed by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, the presidency said, though the committee which was inaugurated on 31 August 2015 is yet to complete its work, its interim report has unearthed several illicit and fraudulent financial transactions.


German police train Nigerian law enforcement operatives

The German Federal Criminal Police (GFCP) on Tuesday in Lagos commenced an eight-day training programme for operatives of law enforcement agencies in Nigeria.


Mr Wilson Uwujaren, spokesman for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), made this known in a statement given to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
