Since the dastardly murder in cold blood of the Head of Protocol Unit of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr. Ibrahim Abubakar, many people who knew this amiable gentleman before his untimely death have been asking one question; what could have made anybody to want to kill him even in his own house?
Ibro, as Ibrahim was fondly called by his friends and associates,
joined the Protocol Unit of the NFF in 2006 from where he rose to become
the head of that unit, a position he held until gunmen suspected to be
hired killers snuffed life out of him in the early hours of Wednesday,
January 7, 2016. A visit to his residence in Kado Estate revealed an
environment that was greatly subdued by what they experienced when the
men of the underworld came calling. Neighbours and other sympathizers
were seen discussing the ugly incident in hush tones.
Though the widow was said to have been taken to Kaduna State where the remains of her husband were laid to rest on the same day according to Islamic rites, some neighbours who though refused to be named told Saturday Vanguard that the incident looked like a sponsored assassination because the assailants did not even bother to get access into the house as they only shot their victim through the window.
According to the source, the attackers invaded the residence of Ibrahim after climbing the fence that enclosed his apartment from behind. This perhaps accounts for the inability of the security operatives at the entrance of the estate to spot them as they entered. And to underscore their determination to carry out their evil plot, they immediately shot and killed the local security who probably identified one of the attackers.
“From what we gathered, the gunmen came in from behind this compound overlooking the express road to Gwarimpa. They must have scaled the fence because from the entrance of this estate, there is security and since they didn’t see them, it only suggests that they jumped the fence from the rear.
“We also heard from the widow of Ibrahim that when they heard the noise around 2 am, they thought they were armed robbers and at that point, Ibrahim left his bedroom to his sitting room and immediately they called his name from outside and as he was trying to know who was calling him, they immediately fired the gun from outside and the bullet hit him on the right eye and they fled the compound immediately through the same way they came in.”
Also speaking to our reporter, the visibly dejected General Secretary of the NFF, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi said he got a call immediately the incident happened and that was around 3 am when they were rushing him to the hospital, Ibrahim gave up the ghost as was confirmed by the medical doctor who examined him.
He further explained that the deceased lost a lot of blood probably due to the fact that the bullet hit him from a very close range.
Sanusi however expressed confidence that the operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) will find the killers. He said the Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Wilson Inalegwu after visiting the crime scene assured that every stone would be upturned to expose the killers.
It was further learnt that sometime last year, the residence of Ibrahim was bugled while he was away with his family and that he was even contemplating leaving the area by the end of this month before the incident. Ibro, a committed staff was also said to be a car dealer who bought and resold cars, as a means of taking care of his responsibilities including taking care of the family of his elder brother who was said to have died some years back. He was survived by his wife, three children; the eldest son aged five while the twin brothers are just three years old.
