Defending champions of the Zenith Bank
League, Dolphins, will take on Customs in one of the semi-final games
billed for Tuesday in Lagos. The other semi final match will see former
champions First Bank taking IGP Queens who defeated Delta Force 60-58 on
Monday to book the game
with the bankers.
The excitement at the Zenith League
playoffs holding at the Sports Hall of the National Stadium has been
dimmed by the poor lighting at the venue. Spectators have raised
concerns over the lighting even as the nature of the hall has forced
some disruptions of games.
Dolphins on Monday consolidated their
lead at their group by beating Plateau Rocks 74-57 while the First Bank
ladies, who have averaged 92 points per game over, defeated AHIP Queens
of Kano 106-38.
The tournament which began on Saturday will continue today with the classification rounds and the semi finals.
On Monday Dolphins dominated their game
from the first quarter and never relinquished their lead till the end of
the game. National team invitee, Patience Okpe, and last season’s Most
Valuable Player, Juliet Currency, continued their impressive runs in the
league.
The defending champions won the first
quarter 17-13 before finishing at half time with 35-24. The third
quarter saw more fireworks as they extended their lead against the
hard-fighting Rocks to finish 55-39.
Coach of the side, Ochuko Okworogun, is hopeful of a successful defence of the title.
She said, “It is one game at a time. We
have finished the group stages, so the focus is on the semi finals. It
is clear that everybody wants to beat us, so we have to be more careful
with each game as the competition progresses.
“We will work harder and take our chances where it needed to be taken.”
The All Star Game is scheduled for Wednesday while the final will hold on Thursday.
